Man Up
Produced & Directed by Zanah Thirus
I created this film because toxic masculinity is exhausting and heartbreaking. How we raise boys to think of women as objects, conquests and something to obtain. How we define masculinity by aggressive behavior and hyper sexuality. How we laugh and find humor in destructive and problematic behavior under the notion of “he was just kidding” or “boys will be boys”. Boys aren’t allowed to have emotions. Boys aren’t allowed to be nurturing. Boys aren’t allowed to give and receive love without being ridiculed. Boys are taught from an early age to adhere to an unrealistic and narrow minded set of rules that deem them “a man”.
It starts at home. It’s never too early to start the conversation.
Boys aren’t monsters. Men aren’t trash. Social constructs are though.
So I’m producing & directing a short film about it. An animated film to be exact.
